Once the manufacturing powerhouse of the nation, Detroit has become emblematic of failing cities everywhere—the paradigmatic city of ruins—and the epicenter of an explosive growth in images of urban decay. In Beautiful Terrible Ruins, art historian Dora Apel explores a wide array of these images, ranging from photography, advertising, and television, to documentaries, video games, and zombie and disaster films.

Apel shows how Detroit has become pivotal to an expanding network of ruin imagery, imagery ultimately driven by a pervasive and growing cultural pessimism, a loss of faith in progress, and a deepening fear that worse times are coming. The images of Detroit’s decay speak to the overarching anxieties of our era: increasing poverty, declining wages and social services, inadequate health care, unemployment, homelessness, and ecological disaster—in short, the failure of capitalism. Apel reveals how, through the aesthetic distancing of representation, the haunted beauty and fascination of ruin imagery, embodied by Detroit’s abandoned downtown skyscrapers, empty urban spaces, decaying factories, and derelict neighborhoods help us to cope with our fears. But Apel warns that these images, while pleasurable, have little explanatory power, lulling us into seeing Detroit’s deterioration as either inevitable or the city’s own fault, and absolving the real agents of decline—corporate disinvestment and globalization. Beautiful Terrible Ruins helps us understand the ways that the pleasure and the horror of urban decay hold us in thrall.

Beautiful Terrible Ruins : Detroit and the Anxiety of Decline In-Depth Review

By our senior writer: Ferenc Matulessy

Today is a exciting day for me because I get to review the Beautiful Terrible Ruins : Detroit! I am long time beauty writer, blogger and reviewer Ferenc Matulessy and you might know me from some of my other reviews. I've written for example about the MUSTANG 50 YEARS by Estee Lauder EDT SPRAY 3.4 OZ (LIMITED EDITION) *TESTER for MEN by Fragrance and the Jane Iredale PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation SPF 20 REFILL - Honey Bronze by Jane Iredale or maybe you have heard of the editorial piece I did on the jane iredale Longest Lash Thickening and Lengthening Mascara, Espresso, 0.42 oz.. Anyway, I have quite a lot experience trying out beauty and recommending only the best to my readers. Therefore I was really happy when this product came on my path.

Introduction

Since 2012 I've been watching Urban Decay1 so I am really excited that I am finally able to try the Beautiful Terrible Ruins : Detroit and writing this review for you guys. While searching for the best deal on this product I stumbled across this offer on Walmart (You can buy it here.) and I immediately jumped on the opportunity. So I got my creditcard out and placed my order. With the standard same day delivery and free shipping it really is a bargain compared to the competitor brands and retailers. Later that day when my Beautiful Terrible Ruins : Detroit was delivered I opened it and was overjoyed with what I saw. I might sound a bit biassed being a longtime Urban Decay customer but this product really steps it up quite a bit, which is immediately noticeable when opening the package. Now that I've been testing it for a couple of days now I feel like I know enough about the Beautiful Terrible Ruins : Detroit to write this review. So keep reading and I will show you why I am so enthusiastic about my brand new Beautiful Terrible Ruins : Detroit.

Best Beautiful Terrible Ruins : Detroit and the Anxiety of Decline deal

Summary

I always start my reviews about beauty with a summary, then a clear list of the pros and cons after which I'll give my rating and conclusion. So as you may have understood from the intro, I am blown away by the Beautiful Terrible Ruins : Detroit. Urban Decay has really outdone itself on this one. The quality is great, and frankly; it just looks awesome. I know aesthetics aren't everything with beauty, but it just needs to be said. Of course the price I got at Walmart was and is unbeatable so make sure to check them out when you decide to buy one yourself. As I have tried many alternatives before, I really got to say they are no match for the Beautiful Terrible Ruins : Detroit. Just the functionalities alone beats all competitors and the durability also seems to be top notch. The customer service of Urban Decay2 is famous for being really generous so if you ever run in to any kind of problem with their products they're always really lenient with finding a solution. Long story short; not much negative to say about the Beautiful Terrible Ruins : Detroit and the Anxiety of Decline really. Make sure to read to the end tho because you might be in for a small surprise!

Pros

This pros list of the Beautiful Terrible Ruins : Detroit could be much longer, and is way longer than the conslist, but the description3 this site has will probably already say it all. Here is just a little piece: "

Apel shows how Detroit has become pivotal". So without further ado, this is the very much incomplete list:
  1. The amazing looks.
  2. The quality is great.
  3. It is everything it promises to be.
  4. $125.06 is just a steal comparing to the alternatives.
  5. There is no brand like Urban Decay when it comes to beauty.
  6. The durability is very nice, so better for the environment.
  7. In this price range, no other product coming out will be matching the Beautiful Terrible Ruins : Detroit for a long time to come.

Cons

I had a tough time thinking of cons for the Beautiful Terrible Ruins : Detroit. Better prices are of course always nice and I don't know if you actually need this luxurious quality4. That's a thing only you can figure out for yourself. However, the list:

  1. Maybe the aesthetics of the product are not your style.
  2. It's a premium product so chances are you don't need this abundance of quality.
  3. The Beautiful Terrible Ruins : Detroit is loved by a lot of professionals so soon everybody will probably have one.

Best Urban Decay product in years

Rating

Considering the points above I can only conclude that the Beautiful Terrible Ruins : Detroit deserves 5 stars, 10/10 an A+++ and just overall praise5. I've read reviews by people saying that it's a little too perfect and that it doesn't leave room for the competition, but I don't really mind a nice monopoly. And Urban Decay sure is heading to become one with this product!

★★★★★

Verdict and Conclusion

This product really will make your life better and will make you a lot happier. (And I didn't even talk about the resale value6!) I've really done my best to be balanced in this article but it turned out to be so positive that I recommend you reading some other reviews, and you'll find out they will tell you the same goody goody story. So I can just say is that I fully recommend the Beautiful Terrible Ruins : Detroit and the Anxiety of Decline to anyone in the market for it.
